Setting the stage for the next Generation of Innovators at Hack54.
Aug 17, 2025
My last article “the Garage48 Accra Mafia” and its impact on Ghana’s tech scene brought back a flood of memories. For me, those events were more than just competitions; they were launchpads that shaped my venture in technology innovation. The hackathons and sprints taught me to value progress over perfection and to intentionally oversimplify solutions rather than overcomplicate them.
After hanging up my coding boots for over a decade and taking on more non-coding partnership roles, I’ve learned that coding alone isn’t enough. That beyond building the right team and securing funding, a key ingredient for success is a palpable obsession to solve real problems. This involves a mix of failures, learnings, iterations, invaluable customer feedback, sustainable impact metrics, and strong value networks.
A few days ago, I met some early-stage startup entrepreneurs at an investor mixer and to explain the power of strategic partnerships to the group gathered around me, I used a simple formula: 0×100=0 (loss), 1×100=100 (break even), 2×100=200 (profit). To me, this is a mathematical breakdown of the power of self and valuable partnerships in any life endeavor — a guiding principle I learned in my early days as a student entrepreneur. It is for these kinds of learnings and experiences from trying to solve real-world problems that the conversation began to start Hack54.
Hack54 will be a convergence of students, innovators, academia, businesses, stakeholders, and regulators. They will come together to build solutions for the future, focusing on six carefully chosen industries that have a direct impact on life and livelihood: Healthcare, Education, Finance, Energy, Arts & Entertainment, and Agriculture. The event will harness the power of matchmaking to build collaboration, facilitate knowledge acquisition and application, and provide real-world insights from stakeholders.
While Africa has no shortage of innovative ideas, we often lack the funding, networks, and collaboration needed to turn them into reality. These sprints and hack sessions are designed not only to build successful businesses but also to train students on the work culture of the gig economy where business runs at the speed of thought, unearth early-stage talent, manage innovation, and instill the practice of building simple yet scalable solutions quickly. Platforms like this are vital for connecting challenges to potential solutions and building the necessary systems for growth and impact.
It’s been an amazing journey so far with the vibrant teams at thedsgnjunkies and Socialite AF Ltd. both stepping up to the table. TheDsgnJunkies brings years of experience, particularly from its “Design Your Greatness” campus tour and “Final Design Conference (FIDCON)” events, which has impacted thousands of students over the last few years. Socialite AF Ltd., a multidisciplinary innovation consulting firm also brings it’s exposure and expertise to bear. Also grateful to all the partners who have believed in this vision early on.
Lets set this stage together.
