I remember the electric atmosphere of technology hackathons and marathons, these events were more than just competitions; they were crucibles where raw talent was forged, groundbreaking ideas took shape, and practical solutions to pressing challenges emerged, often against incredible odds.

It was at one of these huddles that I met some remarkable individuals: Fiifi Baidoo, Maximus Ametogor, Alfred Rowe, Eyram Tawiah, and many others who today are part of major technology innovation projects on the continent. Back then, we were a group of passionate problem-solvers, driven to develop basic yet workable solutions for issues across various sectors — ideate, research, plan, and build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in a whirlwind 48 hours.

This particular hackathon experience was made possible by Garage48, a global hackathon initiative to enrich startup ecosystems worldwide, from the grassroots level, and to deliver maximum impact on a lean budget and within a compressed timeframe. With support from global giants like Google and Nokia, Garage48 set out to inject the “Silicon Valley” ethos into the burgeoning tech scene in Ghana and other rapidly developing markets.

As startup were known to be characterized by resource-constrained environment with rapid decisions and lean budgets being the norm. This particular hackathon was an immersive experience that simulated this environment, demonstrating that with strong motivation and a “get-it-done” attitude, a remarkable amount can be achieved in just 48 hours. Beyond the prototype, the hackathon offered a unique opportunity for participants to learn from each other, fostering collaborations essential for innovation.

My team, comprising seven developers, programmers, designers, and marketers, developed a housing directory portal that won the top prize at the 2011 event. Another standout project was “Back to Ghana,” an online community designed to connect people with the resources they need to establish businesses, build networks, and contribute to communities and ultimately easing their transition.

The impact of these hackathons extended far beyond the 48hours. Fast forward, and many of the members who cut their teeth in those intense sessions have gone on to leave our mark. Alfred Rowe, leads the charge at Egotickets, Africa’s cutting-edge ticketing platform. Fiifi Baidoo co-founded iSpace, Futa, Cloud Port, and a portfolio of other successful tech ventures. Maximus Ametogor has become a key player in the e-sports arena, among other notable endeavors.

…and guess what? The magic is brewing again!
