Get out of the building!

Get out of the building is a customer development methodology that encourages entrepreneurs to leave their offices and interact directly with customers to help validate business assumptions and gather crucial insights for product development by observing how people use products in their natural environments.
I first learned about this in 2014 during a training on the lean startup methodology for developing businesses and products. The framework emphasized rapid iteration, validated learning, and the development of a minimum viable product (MVP). This approach was based on the idea of "failing fast"—that if an idea is going to fail, it should do so quickly and cheaply rather than slowly and expensively. It helped entrepreneurs test ideas and assumptions about the market and customer needs. It offered a deeper understanding of real customer pain points and unmet needs, which in turn helps innovators refine product features, prioritize development efforts, and ensure the product aligns with customer expectations.
In design thinking, customers are the focal source of crucial insights on needs, behaviors, and experiences. This practice, when grounded in empathy, helps uncover latent needs, fosters meaningful innovations, and increases the likelihood of creating successful products and services that truly resonate with the target audience.
The legendary customer-focused service and unique company culture of Zappos, which revolutionized online retail, also exemplifies this principle. In his book, Delivering Happiness, Zappos co-founder and CEO Tony Hsieh acknowledged that prioritizing employee and customer happiness and fostering strong relationships was crucial for long-term business growth.
When I learned this process, I began to listen more attentively for insights, dug deeper to understand passions, and stayed alert for underlying motives. In essence, "getting out of the building" meant moving beyond assumptions, thinking outside the box, and being intentional about gleaning insights directly from your end user.
